[Maine-birds] Mallards on the Penobscot

I know, not very exciting, given the other reports we've been getting.  But after what seems like months of river-watching, with nothing but ring-billed Gulls and the occasional Bald Eagle to break up the monotony, I was intrigued this morning to count over 200 mallards swimming leisurely up the Penobscot.  They appeared to be mostly paired off, and I observed one pair mating in the water.

If the mating takes, the eggs will be laid in just three weeks, right?  Will they survive?  Are the ducks reacting to our January thaw, or do they always mate this early?

There were also 17 Common Mergansers:  9 males and 8 females.
