[Maine-birds] Peregrine and Harrier in Wells 1/7/13

Joanne Stevens, Pat Sanborn, and I birded several areas in York County yesterday.  The day started slow at Nubble light (no Murre), then picked up with two vocal Carolina Wrens in the shrubs on  Marginal Way at the junction of the first path leading of it to the streets behind the path.  (from Perkins Cove).

FYI:  Pat lead us to a neat little eatery at the very end of Perkins Cove (I had no idea it was there) - great view, coffee, quiche and many other tempting but calorie loaded goodies to warm the heart on a cold winter’s day!!

Birding really picked up when we decided to check out Wells Harbor before heading north.  Half way down Harbor Road we stopped to scan the marsh and had a Male N. Harrier come straight at us - eye level - crossing the road right in front of us !  WOW!!  Then Joanne spotted a Peregrine in a tree top.   We enjoyed viewing this bird for a while, I took a back view picture, then we checked out the harbor itself - many of the usual sea ducks found there.  The Peregrine was still in its tree when we returned so we got the scope out for a up close view - that is when we noticed that it must have just had a meal - red stained feathers and a bulging crop.  See pictures of this beautiful bird on my flickr account.  Link below.

Great way to enjoy a Maine winter day.
