[Maine-birds] Saco River Update

The Peregrine has been around pretty regularly.  I saw two reports this weekend when I wasn't at work to observe it.  I have also had between 1 and 3 Great Cormorants, 2 Barrows and up to 4 Common Goldeneyes, 3 Common Mergansers and a large flock of Mallards including two hybrid Mallard x Black Ducks and one very dark bird that I might venture to guess was melanistic.

On Thursday while observing 3 Great Cormorants I noticed them become agitated and one flew off over the water.  The Peregrine swooped in after it, it dove under water and the Peregrine flew up then over the railroad bridge and into Biddeford.

I got a couple of poor photos of that.  I have posted some images on my blog at the link below.  The blog is really targeted to my friends and family who are non-birders, so the text is probably not so interesting, but the photos are there for your enjoyment.

In addition, yesterday at about Noon near the Ice Rink and OA building in Saco (Lund Rd) I had between 36 and 40 Pine Grosbeaks and 2 Red-Tailed Hawks.  There were also two song sparrows and a small flock of robins.

Happy New Year,
Chuck
