Although I have been aware of crows roosting in Waterville in large numbers, I have not observed their final overnight location myself. Maybe old news for some, but quite amazing to me. We watched birds pouring into the low trees at the northbound entrance ramp to Rt 95 at Exit 130 at about 4:45. By the time we left our shopping duties at 5:30 there were thousands of birds coating the trees between the highway and the entrance ramp. The trees were bent low under the weight of what appeared to be thousands of crows. Although I have watched crows go to roost many times, I have never witnessed such an easily asccesible Hitchcock-like spectacular.
The prevailing thought is that crows use these well-lighted sites near people to minimize predation from horned owls and other predators. Wow.
Good birding,
tom
