Back on the island late Wednesday morning with no particular surprises either enroute or on arrival. We were overland much of the way so saw little in the way of birds. All the lakes frozen except a few small open spots. Did see a couple EAGLES and a few DEER.
Back onto the coast just east of Cutler, Maine, there were a few ducks in scattered flocks, mainly BLACK DUCKS & MALLARDS.
Leaving the coast there was the usual scattered but wide spread KITTIWAKES, HERRING GULLS, BLACK BACKED GULLS, GANNETS & ALCIDS.
On and around North Rock & Gull Rock were a handful of GRAY SEALS & HARBOUR SEALS. Also enroute, a couple family sized groups of HARBOUR PORPOISES.
On the island, winter-quiet.
A handful of SONG SPARROWS and one unidentified but probable sub-adult Chipping Sparrow and some 3 dozen PURPLE SANDPIPERS accounted for the land species.
30-odd HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 2 BLACK DUCKS & 5 RED BREASTED MERGANSERS represented the web-footed clans.
Today was little changed except that KITTIWAKES, HERRING GULLS & RAZORBILLS were more evident.
As well, one sub-adult EAGLE dropped by for lunch with a Herring Gull. Messy eaters, those raptors.
And topping off my afternoon circumnavigation of the island were two SNOWY OWLS, one very heavily barred and one very clean white.
