Just to add to the madness, this morning I counted (and photo'd) 5 more Snowy Owls, all immature and heavily pigmented on their ventral sides at Popham Beach. One bird was out in the marsh on the Atkins Bay side, perched there for over an hour; One was on the eastern end of New Sand Island, separated from me by high tide; and three were on Three Herons Island (one on eastern flank, two on the very top along the ridge line.) The New Sand I. bird had a very dark cap, like the others, but also had a point of darkness coming down onto his forehead...like the kid on the Addams Family.
I dipped on my target bird (Short-eared Owl) and can't believe I missed this bird. Two female Harriers were actively strafing the marsh on both sides of the road. A Lapland Longspur was more easily heard than seen with 12 H Larks. --
