Re: [Maine-birds] shrike versus mocker

Some years ago I witnessed a shrike/mocker interchange as a roving shrike landed in a multiflora rose bush that was part of a mocker's winter territory. After a brief period of polite mutual inspection, the mocker routed the shrike from the area, harassing and escorting him to the far perimeters of the territory.

I have recently been asked by several people about differentiating a Northern Shrike from a Northern Mockingbird. Quite a few folks saw my shrike photo of today and thought it was a mocker. This is a mistake I've made a few times myself.  I made a collage two photos, one of each bird in similar lighting, in the same tree (at my house in Phippsburg). I'm hoping it will be helpful for some to see them side by side and appreciate how easy it is to confuse them on the fly, so to speak. Hope this is helpful, just don't 'mock' me! :)
