I had some nice winter bird observations in Palermo this morning. Walking along Arnold Lane in Palermo, I observed a good-sized flock of Snow Bunting and a handful of Pine Siskin mixed in with goldfinches along the road. I returned to the site later this morning armed with my camera. While I did not encounter the buntings or the siskin again, I found nearly 50 Common Redpoll picking grit in the roadway and feeding on birch catkins along the roadway. I photographed and observed the redpolls for several minutes (sifting for a hoary, but alas) before a fuel truck came through and flushed the birds well down the road and out of sight. I revisited the area throughout the day, but was not able to relocate the birds.
-- I've only seen lone redpolls in recent years. Seeing so many at once was quite a treat!
