[Maine-birds] Great Black Hawk, 12/6pm

Hi all,

The GREAT BLACK HAWK was flushed by people (by both playing children and birders/photographers, I believe) out of the southwest corner of Deering Oaks Park at about 3:15 this afternoon.

Observing it fly across I-295, Julie and Phil Brown relocated the bird in the neighborhood adjacent to the highway. They report it was very flighty, and observed it again flushed by a birder who walked right under it. It may have been considering a roost in a large conifer, but it was not sitting still yet as of their last observation (they were watching it from over 100ft away).

So clearly the bird is still in the area, and presumably the park remains the best place to look for it. However, if you are to fan out to look in neighborhoods, PLEASE put the bird and the homeowners first! Don't ever enter a yard, following parking rules, avoid creeping around before dawn, and especially, can we please all give the bird a little more room? Observations of continued over-pursuit and unnecessarily-close approach continue. Please don't ruin it for everyone else - and the bird!

Thanks and good luck,
Derek
