It was just a casual morning boat trip into the Pushaw Lake inlet marsh in Hudson today. A flying least bittern landed in plain view on a tall stump. This is the fourth one I've seen in there this year, but it's the first youngster – confirmed for the Maine Bird Atlas.
Darker, streakier, downy fluff on headtop. And clueless. It stood high, in plain view, for several minutes, unwary of any potential danger.
