Last week's results:
This is the last week of challenges but there is still plenty of atlasing to be done. I highly recommend everyone reads our latest blog post on "Atlasing in August" for tips on what to look for and common errors that we see this time of the year: https://www1.maine.gov/wordpress/ifwbirdatlas/2020/08/06/august-atlasing-tips/
Last week's challenges proved to be a little tough but good results came in. Hermit Thrushes picked up 9 new confirmed blocks and Barred Owls added two. Priority Block completion continues to rise too, with now over 32% complete. Congratulations to Donna from Brunswick, Rob from Cumberland, and Sean from Wiscasset for being chosen by Excel's random number generator as winners this week!
Here are the challenges for this week:
1) Wild Turkey - one of the few species we have not moved out of the safe dates for (read the blog above!) but a pretty easy one to confirm as poults will follow their mothers around. Report your confirmed codes (probably all FL) this week!
2) Priority Block Challenge - Find an incomplete Priority Block near you and work on confirmed breeding codes, especially for late nesting species. To track this challenge, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/tobv2xBvW82N3BAW9
3) American Goldfinch - Repeating from a couple week ago because 1) we are still within the safe dates so all codes apply, and 2) this is actually a hard species to confirm. I saw my first fledgling just yesterday, so keep an eye out for them this week!
Good birding and happy atlasing!
