[Maine-birds] Whimbrels at Flat Bay, Harrington

This morning on the early tide we saw 30 Whimbrel fly in to the mudflats from the south and start feeding in a frenzy! But 26 of them left within 15 minutes of their arrival, flying north and gaining altitude.  About 20 minutes later we heard flight calls and then observed 15 birds flying north. Then more flight calls from the south but we couldn't find the birds - sometimes the flight calls seem to bounce all around.

The birds were obviously heading towards the blueberry barrens of Columbia and/or Cherryfield where IDFW bios have observed them in the past.

So, the Whimbrel are here but their arrivals and departures to and from the Flat Bay mudflats seem to be more serendipitous than our past experience with these birds!!!  We have seen them only 4 times since July 28 when we first saw them.

Semipalmated Plover, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Shirt-billed Dowitchers and Black-bellied Plover are starting to appear in greater numbers - in the hundreds now....soon to be thousands...
