Re: [Maine-birds] Bicknell's Thrush and stuff

Hi Bob, I have not heard from you and I understand that you are busy finding birds.  Checking to be sure that Pittison Farm is on and where we are meeting at what time?  Thanks, Pat

A few weird observations today while doing a couple of Bicknell's Thrush surveys in the Kingfield/Stratton area for the Vermont Center for Ecostudies:

1)      Besides, yes, getting the thrush, we got overwhelmed again with Mourning Warblers. What is it about western Maine that is so friendly to MOWAs?
2)      I wrote in the Maine Birding Trail guidebook that the Caribou Pond Road near Sugarloaf was a good place for Philadelphia Vireos. I underestimated. It's a great place.
3)      Did the rain and cold kill off the biting insects? We were out all day and I never saw a single mosquito. Black flies popped out a couple of times, but no biting. I went deetless today and can't otherwise explain the lack of bugs.
4)      The cone crop this year in the Carrabassett area looks like it will be nonexistent. After a cone boom last year, and a multitude of crossbills this winter, the woods are nearly picked clean and most firs and spruces are not growing any this year. Weird.
5)      No matter what directions the Vermont Center for Ecostudies gives you to reach a survey site, they're wrong. Thank goodness for GPS.
6)      On the other hand, even bad directions are better than climbing Big Spencer Mountain northeast of Moosehead in the dark again.
