[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights and Goose Fields Update, 12/7-13

Hi all,

Just a few sightings of note from me over the past seven days included the following:

- 16 Dunlin, Freeport Town Wharf, 12/10.

- 1 Savannah Sparrow, Pott's Point, Harpswell, 12/12.

- 1 adult Iceland Gull, Bath Waterfront, 12/12.

- 1 KILLDEER, Bath landfill, 12/12.

"Greater Yarmouth Goose Fields" Update:

Snow and ice coated the fields this week and the frigid temperatures kept them inundated through week's end.  With more snow expected, the fields are likely to remain covered for a while.  With that, the "goose field season" comes to an end.  However, many of the local resident Canada Geese that began to assemble here in August (see earlier posts) winter in nearby coves of Casco Bay or fly short distances back and forth to other feeding areas.  If we get a warm-up, some of these residents will return to the fields until snow returns once again.  Meanwhile, these scattered overwintering flocks have contained a rarity in the past, such as the Greater White-fronted Goose that overwintered in Portland-Falmouth a few years ago.  I will usually check the local goose flocks on a regularly basis throughout the winter, but I didn't get a chance to check many spots this week.  There's always the chance the recent white-front is still around.
