There. I said it. After extended views with Don Mairs and later by Doug Hitchcox, who got some great photos, I think this bird is best regarded as a Thayer's Gull. It ticks all the boxes, but it has that East coast feel of a "not quite right" Thayer's Gull. I can accept that; things are different out here. I won't bore folks with all the details behind that. Instead, if you want to see what fits a Thayer's Gull, make your way to the open water above Shawmut Dam between 11 and 3. Again, go to the east end of Kennebec St. in Shawmut (off Rt 201 north of I-95 in Fairfield), turn left after crossing the railroad tracks and walk up to where you can see the area above the dam on the Kennebec River.
