[Maine-birds] Maine Birds

July 28, at 7:15 PM

We have not been able to send e-mails lately but now the problem is fixed.
.
On July 11, the latter part of one of my e-mails said:
"We also saw a mystery duck and perhaps someone can shed some light on it.
The head and upper body were dark brown to black and both the same color.
The shape of the head was definitely Black Duck/Mallard.
It got out of the water and began preening. There was a white wing patch (contrasting to the purple wing patch of the Black Duck).
It lifted its body and wings briefly to reveal whitish underwing linings as a Black Duck has.
The breast was snow white with no other markings on it.
May I assume that this duck was a Black Duck/Mallard hybrid? If it was, is it usual to have such a white breast?
Is there any other duck that matches this description?
Thanks!"

I am still wondering about this duck. Comments, please!?

I also wrote an email on July 25 as follows:
7 AM - For a few days, there has been a pair of GREAT EGRETS in a small wetland in Dexter. They are on Route 7 between Dexter and Dover-Foxcroft,about 3 miles from Dexter heading north and on the left. Some of you might remember about 12 years ago when there were 7 - 10 Egrets in this same wetland which stayed for a long time. We don't see them in our area very often so this is a treat.

Tonight, (July 28) at 7:15, both Egrets were present along with 2 GREAT BLUE HERON which also hang out there. The Egrets are shy and are less inclined to fly away if seen from a vehicle. Once a person exits their vehicle, the birds become vigilant.
