[Maine-birds] Re: (Maine Birds) Mount Desert Island Birds: Great Egret, Solitary Sandpiper and Nelson's Sparrow continue July 28 2012

Hello,

This mornings birding trips produced a few good birds on Mount Desert Island including a Great Egret at the upper end of Pretty Marsh.

The First-of-the-year Solitary Sandpiper  adult was flushed  at the MDI High School Ponds.
A large mixed flock of Young-of –the-Year   Golden-crowned Kinglets,  Yellow-rumped, BTGW and Black and White Warbler , CYTH  and Song Sparrow  surround the ponds,  so the birding is excellent especially for  young novice birders.

Nelson's Sparrow (Ammodramus nelsoni) continue this morning at Alley Island overlook with  two or three adult birds  relocated and photographed.  A second male preformed a display/mating flight, briefly flutter-flying upwards about 4 feet above the marsh, swooping a few times before landing in the grass. Another  male was  calling  loudly from the a salt marsh tuft of reeds and grass and was not shy at all sitting proudly on his throne.  Another Nelson's flew to the same tuft and disappeared into the grass...

If anyone has other known locations for Nelson's Sparrow on the island,  could you please respond offline.  I am also looking for any information about the Bass Harbor Marsh NESP population which use to be found in the upper reaches of Bass Harbor Marsh.  Is the research project still underway or has that project ended??  Thank you

Michael
