So here in Gardiner I still am dealing with my Merlin frustration this year. I did see an adult Merlin 3 days ago hunting starlings at the Oaklands Farm, but despite long walks each morning have not yet heard the youngsters.
However last night visiting my son in Waterville, there was at least one young Merlin teed up on a pine tree right there on Quarry Road near the Colby campus. This is right at the beginning of Quarry Rd near the hospital. The fledgie was calling constantly and the residents there said he had been squawking up there nonstop for a few days now. As it was getting dark there might have been more than one, hard to tell. So Merlins are also nesting up there in Waterville.
Still singing in Gardiner in the mornings are B/W Warbler, BT Green Warbler, Ovenbird, Pine Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Warbling and RE Vireo, Brown Creeper, and Indigo Bunting. A big pile of migrating Bobolinks is in the field at the end of Lincoln Ave.
