[Maine-birds] Re: (Maine Birds) Mount Desert Island Birds: Nelson's Sparrow

Hello everyone,

Todays Bird of the Day was an unexpected Nelson's Sparrow found calling in the salt marsh on private property at Alley Island Overlook along the north and western side of Town Hill.  When we parked,  the first bird I heard was this wonderful Nelson's male. Described as "water hitting a hot skillet" it is always a delight to find a new location for this bird.  The question remains whether this bird is nesting.  Ed Hawkes is aware of this bird and we will continue looking for it to see if there is a nest.  This is my fourth location for Nelson's Sparrow.   MJG

Comments: Mary and Steve Tice are folks that have join many birding adventures on Mount Desert Island over the 5-7 years. They were joined by Janet and Bob Butler-Unga. The weather is helping us in our efforts to document the birds of Mount Desert Island with a little rain and cooling down. We are finding excellent mixed flocks of birds in most habitat types with Warblers.  Flycatchers and Vireos are the most vociferous of the birds. A quiet Ovenbird searching for food was found hidden in the underbrush of a Hemlock thicket while Hermit Thrush continues to dominate the forest background calls. The weather was a light drizzle, overcast and almost perfect.

Comments: Mary and Steve Tice were joined by Janet and Bob Butler-Unga Nelson's Sparrow male singing at the edge of a salt pond was the Bird of the Day. As we got out of the van, the first bird I heard was Nelson's which we located in the scope for excellent observations of a calling male. This makes the fourth location I have had Nelson's on Mount Desert island including Clark Cove salt marsh, Babson Creek and Bass Harbor Marsh. The next question to answer , "is this bird nesting"?
