Mount Desert Island Birds:  Nelson's Sparrow and Solitary Sandpiper

 

Sunshine and beautiful blue sky greeted the day with many mixed flocks of birds encountered with large numbers of Young-of-the-year birds. Notable birds include Great Egret at Pretty Marsh, Solitary Sandpiper at MDI High School Ponds and Nelson's Sparrow at the head of the island.

Comments: Valerie Kiddwell and Gordon and Stacey Stockemer from Kansas where treated to an excellent mix of birds today including a Solitary Sandpiper and a grunt load of Warblers. The sun was strong accentuating an excellent Maine morning.

Comments: Valarie Kiddwell and Gordon and Stacy Stockemer from Kansas NELSON"S SPARROW was relocated today calling loudly from a salt marsh tuft of reeds and grass. Two other individuals were located as well as an aerial display over the marsh and a quiet bird nears the first male.

Nelson's Sparrow (Ammodramus nelsoni) 3 This is a new location for Nelson's and I am hopeful that this is a nest site. A silent bird approached the first male we saw sitting high in the grass, than disappeared. A third male responded to phishing allowing some excellent photos.
