For wildlife this week, the U.S. House of Representatives is a House of Horrors. The House is expected to vote on a series of bills that would cause significant damage to our nation's wildlife and the habitat they depend on. We urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to oppose HR 2954 and HR 3964, which, along with other bills, constitute a week-long war on America's birds and wildlife by the U.S. House of Representatives. HR 2954 includes a number of environmentally destructive public lands provisions, including one that would overturn the new National Park Service plan on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The new plan protects endangered shorebirds like Piping Plovers and endangered nesting sea turtles from unrestrained beach driving that destroyed nests and chicks season after season. Now those birds and turtles are making a comeback. The bill also delays timely reviews of grazing leases, which are necessary to ensure sound conservation of species like the imperiled Greater Sage-Grouse, and prevents the implementation of new conservation measures in the National Greater Sage-Grouse Planning Strategy. HR 3964 is a radical and unjustified response to California drought that is intended to override the Endangered Species Act and prevent California from using its state laws to manage its own water resources and to protect its endangered species. It would also dramatically weaken or eliminate federal laws that protect salmon and other native fish, as well as end programs that provide critical habitat for birds. For example, this bill would end the San Joaquin River Restoration Program, which is restoring vital riverside habitat for birds like the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Least Bell's Vireo, and Yellow Warbler. The bill uses the drought as a Trojan Horse to attack these important programs and make them scapegoats for the water crisis. These misguided bills are an egregious attack on our nation's bedrock environmental laws and conservation principles.
