Re: [Maine-birds] S. Thomaston & Owls Head

My husband Paul and I were criss-crossing with Glenn around the Owls Head-Camden area today, with the end-goal of cheeseburgers at the Owls Head General Store. And yes, we were the people harangued by a sheriff's deputy, who must have been really bored/cranky: "Yes, I see the owl, but you're blocking the whole road." (We were not. I think he just wanted an excuse to flash his blue lights.)

In addition to the birds Glenn mentioned--owls at the airport, hawks and robins at Weskeag (one of the RT Hawks swooped down in front of us and nailed a small rodent in the snow), and Iceland Gulls at OH Harbor, we also saw:

1 Glaucous Gull at Owls Head Harbor, 1st cycle
1 American Coot, continuing in Camden Harbor

My mother went over to the Owls Head airport after we had left and saw both SNOW as well, but she said she walked away at one point and when she came back, they had both flown. But probably not going far... the snowfall has begun.

The stars lined up for us and other birders late this morning. Weskeag Marsh in S. Thomaston gave us 2 Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Rough-winged Hawks, 14 Robins. A Sharp-shinned Hawk flew in front of us as we drove into S. Thom. Center, just before the “keag.” 2 Snowy Owls spent most of the morning at the end of the runway that touches the Dublin Rd. where the Birch Point State Park turnoff is on Ballyhac Rd. One was the dark bird that probably has been already recorded. He was perched in a tree about 150’ from the road. The other was a lighter bird which was so close to the road you really didn’t need binoculars.

A member of the local constabulary (sheriff?) drove by and shoed some birders off the Dublin Rd. I’m not sure what’s going on with that. There was adequate visibility in both directions, and it is a public road after all. Does anyone have any information on that?

Owls Head harbor coughed up 5 Iceland Gulls, including a beautiful adult in very good plumage.

Oh yes, and a Peregrine Falcon was chased into the open by a small flock of crows, also at the airport.

And this morning another peregrine flew off the steeple at the chestnut St. Baptist Church in Camden.
