I've been reminded that it was not Dean Rush who was Secretary of State in 1954, but rather John Foster Dulles.  Secretary Dulles worked for the law firm that represented United Fruit.  His brother, Allen, was then Director of the CIA, and both brothers were stockholders in United Fruit.

Note also the year of the coup in Guatemala was 1954, not 1982.

In the discussion on the apparent decline of Baltimore orioles, it was mentioned that Breeding Bird Survey data indicated an average decline of this species of 2.6 percent per year.  That rate of decline would halve the population of orioles about ever 23 years.
