[Maine-birds] Mundane chores

Some of those most mundane chores can yield the most joyous natural moments. Earlier this week while walking to the mail box, heard a weird, high-pitched  whooooop. Looked around and up in an oak tree was a Pileated Woodpecker throwing its head back and making the sound. Above was another Pileated. After watching a while, heard a third Pileated, then FOUR Pileated flew off across the meadow. FOUR within 30 feet!

Just now while washing dishes and looking at all the back-lit birds perched in the trees, one looked a bit "off". Binoculars brought into brilliant view a Northern Shrike surveying the bird feeders. Nature never ceases to amaze, delight, and surprise.
